In the spirit of love and justice, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul offers person-to-person service to our neighbors in need. As Vincentians, we provide more than just resources; we provide a loving and compassionate presence to families facing emergency hardships. We believe that through this dedicated work, a profound contact with Christ emerges. It is this spiritual connection—seeing the face of Christ in those we serve—that distinguishes the Society from other social agencies.

The Essential Elements of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul
The Society is built on three essential elements, as articulated by our founder Frédéric Ozanam and enshrined in the Rule and Manual of the Society:
Spirituality: Vincentians are called to holiness — such was the intent of the founders in 1833, and such is the intent today. We bear witness to Christ and to his Church, showing that the faith of Christians inspires them to work for the good of all humanity. Our Conference meetings are less occasions for conducting business than for deepening our unity for spiritual reasons — with opening and closing prayer, and Vincentian reflection, we seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all that we do. (Manual 3.1; Rule 2.5.1)
Friendship: The Society brings together people of good will, supporting one another through mutual example and true friendship, drawing closer to Christ by fulfilling his essential commandment: love of God expressed in love of neighbor. Our Conference is a genuine community of faith and love — members journey together toward holiness, because true holiness is found in perfect union with God and in generous service to others. (Rule 2.3)
Service: The heart of our work is the personal encounter. We establish direct, person-to-person contact between our members and those who suffer, offering the most effective and compassionate assistance possible. Home visits and direct outreach are the hallmarks of Vincentian service — not because we are a social agency, but because we see the face of Christ in every person we serve, and we are transformed by that encounter. The Society serves those in need regardless of creed, ethnic or social background, health, or gender. (Rule 1.3)
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been present in the United States since 1845. Our OLMC Conference is proud to carry on this living tradition of faith in action here in Fairfield.
